Imperial Oil Provides Major Grant to Sahtu Literacy Program

Imperial Norman Wells Operations and the Sahtu Divisional Educational Council (SDEC) are pleased to announce the award of a major grant of $50,000 in support of the SDEC Leveled Literacy Intervention Program.

The SDEC Leveled Literacy Intervention Program provides guided reading program in all five Sahtu schools and has seen strong success. Wanda Quigg, SDEC School Programs Consultant, says, “We have made some gains in student reading abilities with the Guided Reading Program. Leveled Literacy Intervention has been documented to increase those gains with students who struggle with reading, and helping these students maintain these gains. We're looking forward to being able to expand the Leveled Literacy Program to the older students with the assistance provided by Imperial.”

The $50,000 grant is part of Imperial Norman Wells “Partnering today, for tomorrow” program, which seeks to identify opportunities to partner with Sahtu community organizations and initiatives on projects that will provide long-term benefits for Sahtu communities. Says Jennifer Watson, Imperial’s Norman Wells Superintendent, “Honestly, I can’t think of a better legacy Imperial can leave in this region than supporting education. Imperial does this through our scholarships, education and training programs and this program continues that focus supporting literacy for students, a gift that will benefit students and their communities now and in the years to come. We will continue to explore opportunities to work collaboratively with Sahtu organizations and communities.”
